Symptoms Are Clues, Not Answers: What Your Water May Be Telling You

Orange staining, for example, may point toward iron, but appearance alone cannot tell you the amount present, whether something else is contributing, or which treatment—if any—is appropriate. Start by Documenting What You Notice

Common Water Symptoms and What They May Suggest
Orange or Reddish-Brown Stains
Orange or reddish-brown staining is often associated with iron, but color alone cannot confirm the cause, concentration, or source. The iron may be present in the source water, introduced through corrosion, or appear differently after exposure to air. Note whether the water is initially clear and changes color after sitting, and whether the staining occurs throughout the home or only at certain fixtures. Public-water customers can begin by contacting their utility; private-well owners should consider testing through a state-certified laboratory.
Black or Dark Stains
Black or dark staining may be associated with manganese, but other materials or plumbing conditions can look similar. Document where the stain appears and whether particles are present. Testing should identify what is actually in the water before any treatment decision is made.
Blue-Green Stains or a Metallic Taste
Blue-green staining can be a sign of copper corrosion. A metallic taste can also have more than one cause, including plumbing materials, corrosion, or metals in the source water. Because corrosion can contribute metals to water, do not select treatment from the stain color alone. Consider the home's plumbing, water pH, and appropriate laboratory testing.
White Scale, Spots, or Soap That Does Not Lather Well
White scale and mineral buildup are commonly associated with hardness, which is mainly related to dissolved calcium and magnesium. Rotten-Egg Odor
A rotten-egg odor may be associated with hydrogen sulfide gas or certain bacteria, but the location of the odor matters. If it occurs only with hot water, the water heater may be involved. If it appears in both hot and cold water throughout the home, the source water or plumbing system may need investigation. Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas and can escape quickly after water is exposed to air, so sampling should follow the laboratory's instructions and may need to occur close to the source. Do not assume that an odor confirms sulfur or that one treatment method fits every cause.
Cloudy, Milky, or Colored Water
Cloudiness may be described as turbidity—the loss of water clarity caused by suspended particles or other material that scatters light. It can come from harmless air bubbles, sediment, plumbing work, pressure changes, or other water-quality conditions. Note whether the water clears after standing and whether the change occurs at every tap. If cloudiness is new, persistent, accompanied by particles, or follows flooding or well work, contact the appropriate utility or health authority and consider targeted testing.

Strong Chemical, Fuel, or Unfamiliar Odor
A sudden strong chemical, gasoline, fuel-oil, or solvent-like odor should be treated seriously. Do not try to diagnose it by smell or cover it with a general-purpose filter. Avoid drinking the water until you have contacted your public water utility, local health department, or environmental agency for instructions. Private-well owners may need specialized testing based on nearby activities and the suspected source.
No Symptom Does Not Mean No Concern
Many contaminants cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. Clear water can still contain bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic, or other substances of concern.
