Consider tap testing for lead and copper. Plumbing and fixtures can affect water after it enters the property.
Odor, Taste or Staining
Choose targeted testing based on the symptom and water source. Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas, so testing may require a stabilized sample or testing at the source.
Treatment Tech 101
Water treatment is not one-size-fits-all. The appropriate technology depends on your water source, reliable test results, and the specific issue you need to address. Here is a plain-language overview of four commonly used treatment technologies—without the dealer sales pitch.
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
Reverse osmosis uses pressure to move water through a semipermeable membrane. Depending on the system and contaminant, it can reduce many dissolved substances. It is commonly used at a dedicated drinking-water faucet. Testing should determine whether RO is appropriate, and the system requires regular filter and membrane maintenance.
Ion Exchange (Softening)
A conventional water softener exchanges calcium and magnesium—the primary hardness minerals—for sodium or potassium ions. This reduces hardness and scale buildup but is not designed to remove every contaminant. The system requires regular salt or potassium replenishment and routine maintenance.
UV Disinfection
Ultraviolet disinfection uses UV light to inactivate certain microorganisms when the system is correctly sized, installed, and maintained. UV does not remove sediment, minerals, or dissolved contaminants, and pretreatment may be needed for it to work effectively. The lamp and protective sleeve require routine service.
Whole-House Filtration
Whole-house—or point-of-entry—filtration treats water as it enters the home. The filter media and system design should be selected according to reliable test results and the specific issue being addressed. Depending on the system, it may reduce sediment, chlorine, odors, or certain contaminants, but no single filter removes everything. Filters or media require scheduled replacement and maintenance.
